In Genesis 3 we learn that once Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden they had to travel in the lone & dreary world working by the sweat of their brow. They had many children and taught them the ways of God. But then, as always, Satan came among them causing people to choose between his way or the Lord’s.

The story of Cain and Abel is only the first of biblical stories that shows the struggle of choosing good or bad. Cain, it is told,(Gen 4-5) brought to the Lord a sacrifice of fruit and Abel brought the firstling of his flock.
The Lord accepted Abel’s offering but rejected Cain’s. Many feel that Cain’s was rejected because he brought that which wasn’t really a sacrifice for him to give, and Abel brought his best, which was a sacrifice for him. Others feel that Cain’s attitude was all wrong, that he was resentful and Abel was humble and willing. In the end, it is clear that Cain resented the Lord’s rejection greatly and decided to take Abel’s life.
After successfully killing Abel, the Lord asked him where his brother was. Cain lied and replied that he didn’t know and wasn’t his brother’s keeper. (Gen 4:9) The Lord then cursed Cain and his descendents after which, Cain is sent away, with his family and followers to a distant land.
Josephus records that Cain’s descendents caused lots of problems for the
children of men after that, all the way down to the time of Noah.
